Seaton Ross has its very own witch! You can see Margaret Harper’s gravestone in the local churchyard dated June 1853 and bearing the now barely legible inscription:
The faults you have seen in me
Strive to avoid
Search your own hearts
And you’ll be well employed.
‘Peg’ Harper lived in an old thatched cottage behind the Wesleyian Chapel. The story goes that she was leaning on her garden gate when horses pulling a cart of grain stopped opposite and would move no further as a result of a spell she put on them.
